9" rebuild kit ?
I just got a rebuild kit new, but second hand off a dude and the label on the box says daytona. Whats the difference in a daytona vs regular rebuild kit?

wonderfullll..... it was listed on pirate as "9 inch regular low pinion 4.56 gears and rebuild kit" never assume right?VerticalTRX wrote:Its referring to the Daytona style pinion support, which uses a larger pinion bearing than the standard unit.

I'm just going from memory here so...
IIRC you can use the Daytona style pinion support on a standard housing, but you have to use daytona style gears. They use a 28sp pinion just like the regular gears, but the pinion is machined differently.
You should probably make a post in the Ford section on Pirate to be sure. Just don't tell them its going under a Jeep, tell them its under your 197X F-150 and you'll be good.

Well I broke out the calipers and measured 1.3125" dia pinion shaft (I guess 1.313 from what I see on google) which matched the ID of my 2 pinion bearings. I called Randy's Ring and Pinion and they said the daytona pinion support WILL bolt up to my C7AW housing so I'm assuming the ODs will work for me (I haven't taken the pinion out of the third yet). Weird thing is I'm getting 2.9" OD (2.89 on google) for the carrier bearings which I believe suggests a 28 spline carrier even though I have 3 31 spline shafts (2 taken out of axle) in my garage; any thoughts on this?VerticalTRX wrote:I'm just going from memory here so...

The rebuild kit had 3.25" OD bearings (aftermarket only; strange etc.) so I got taken for a ride there, but I may luck out as the guy I bought the used Detroit from said he was leaving relatively new carrier bearings on it, I'll still have to buy the Daytona support, but maybe by chance the carrier bearings are 2.89" OD.
Dear Eight Pound, Six Ounce, Newborn Baby Jesus, don’t even know a word yet, just a little infant, so cuddly, but still omnipotent, please let my Detroit carrier bearing OD be 2.89"

Re: Well
thanks, I just happened to luck out and the detroit came with the 2.89sAndrew wrote:I believe those bearings are $12 a piece at Autzone (Timken). Not too bad if you have to go buy them.
