The 302 was a good stock option in Fox bodies, and admittedly there are a few that are running decent numbers on the track, but that's it. They will never be a 'big power' off-road motor. Low end torque is dismal, and they just don't have the cubes to make any decent power for off-roading. Not to mention 400hp is really the limit on a stock 302 block, they aren't very meaty. 350+ cu. in. is what I would consider the bare minimum for what Adam is wanting to do, and really 400+ cu. in. would do it best. Big tires and axles need big torque, a 302 just isn't up to the task IMO.

4.3L Vortec from 97+ Blazer or S-10 is the way to go. Plenty of power, .......
Plenty of power for a Barbie jeep. This is and should be an ignorant project. 4.3's are NOT ignorant. tbi 454's and 6.0's are.

Adam,
I'll keep a look out in the sticks here. The 454 would rock but a 6.0 would be another good option as well. I know that Agee's sells them often for under $1k. It's time to really step it up.

No doubt...

Henry, I'm not against the 302, but plans change and I'm not sure that the 302 would move it effectively. Plus, this way I can save the 302 for the next build.

The purpose of this build is pure reliability. Low-leafs-40"+tires-big power. That's it. I want to be able to go out and pound on this thing and roll it over 20 times and it still works. Links & coilovers are cool, but not for this Jeep...

In that case, I agree with gen III SBC power, especially if you can get dry-sump for it (no oil spillage during a roll-over)
