My Wheel Dilemma

My Wheel Dilemma
So my Tacoma came with a set of 16" steel wheels. I LOVED the look of the 17" FJ alloys on tacomas, and when I found a set of 5 for CHEAP i jumped on it. I am waiting until the 245/XX/16 dunflop thread is worn down before I replace them and swap out wheels.
Now here is the dilemma:
I bought the FJ alloys before I planned on making my truck a weekend offroad rig. Since it is a daily driver as well, I am now trying to figure out if I want to keep the FJ wheels, keep the stock 16" or get an aftermarket set of 16" steelies. Either way I am going to get 265 tires when the time comes. Factoring in offroading, DD MPG, and anything else do guys recommend I go with the 17" alloy FJ wheels, or stick to 16" steel?
On another note, anyone have any better recommendations on tires than the Nitto Terra Grapplers? I am looking for a good compromise between DD gas mileage and offroad performance.

I narrowed my choice for my DD down to the Nitto's and the BFG's. Major plus of the Nitto's for my truck is the E load rating in my size, but my last two sets of tires were D rated and I haven't had any problems. Ultimately I went with the BFG's again due the their great tread wear and many bad reviews I read about the Terra Grapplers poor tread wear.

running tall skinny's would make you a hippie....you dont want that....MtnToys wrote:I'd say keep the stock 16s and get a set of 255/85 interco trxus MT for wheeling and put some BFG AT on the 17s for the street. I'm a bit bias though
i have the 265/75/16 terra grapplers on my truck solely because i got them alot cheaper than the bfg's a/t's. havent had them long enough to comment on tread wear although i cant tell much difference in performance between them and the bfg's in snow and loose dirt. so far im glad i saved some money and went with the nitto's
plus all the bling bling h2's seem to run the nitto's you will fit right in with some 17's

if your running bobcat-ish trails then you will be fine.....i have run most of bobcat in my tacomadgerm wrote:Well I offroad a decent amount, but no rock crawling or TOO extreme of stuff. You think I will be fine with a little less sidewall and and alloys?
and hippie reminded me of something.....i beat the piss out of my terra grapplers up at mountain lake in the snow and bombing fire roads in various places. i.e. sometimes i drive on them as if im trying to destroy them. and they are doing just fine, little bit of tread on the outer lugs worn down but thats expected when your sliding dirt roads with the rear locked. and doing donuts @ 90+ mph on the speedo for a solid 60 sec.
