winch ?

Post by jstables »

So the other day at the junkyard I found a warn m8000 and bought it for $25 bucks but it was missing a few wires on the solenoids and before I put any money into it I wanna make sure the motor works. So does anyone know how I could just check the motor to see if it is good ?

-I did open it up and the brushes are in good shape and there is not much rust inside. I have seen worse looking motors run.

There should be two of the wires going down into the motor case. Put 12V across them and it should run one way. Reverse the polarity of them and it should run the other. That's all those solenoids in there do is switch from one polarity to the other. BTW, those solenoids are nothing other than Ford starter solenoids, at least from what I saw on Ctrow's at Harlan that time we had the top off it.

Terry is right there is a good write up on pirate with pics. Also there was a guy on ebay selling the complete warn control box at a very good price.

Thats a good price even if your motor does not run. DC brushed motors are simple and hardy. You should be able to get it to work fine.

Thats an awesome deal. Warn sells all the replacement parts you might need for the planetary as well, they sadly arent quite as tough as the motor, ut the cost is reasonable as long as you don't have to replace everything. I rebuilt mine last summer for pretty cheap and its been working great since.

I bought new solenoids off eBay for $70 and after wiring it up it still does nothing except fire the solenoids so I'm less than a hundred bucks into but I'm pretty surety motor is shot. So I'm just gonna keep them and probably just buy a new winch in the future.

I'm kinda familiar with winching your rig, and wasn't it throwing a shit fit at BCDS? Or was something else causing that?

You make a great winch spotter :flipoff2:

It was having issues at BCDS, but I later discovered that was due to my alternator coming loose and allowing the belt to slip, which killed my charging system.
