Getting the studs out of a D30 for quick disconnects

Post by TerryD »

If anyone is putting disconnects on your XJ/MJ/ZJ sway bar, this may help. To get the studs out of the axle mounts, go to AutoZone and get their "Tie Rod End & Pitman Arm Puller for Compact Cars", OEM brand part #25297. I've been told a regular Pitman Arm Puller would work, but the jaws are smaller and almost a 1/4" closer together on this one. Cost is ~$15 but time and effort savings are much higher.

Cut the stud in half with what ever you have. I used a hack saw. I had to take the blade off and put the drag link inside the saw on the passenger side to have room to work it. Make sure to cut it as square as possible, and then use the puller to press out the stud. Don't be fooled, the torx head is just for looks. It is pressed into the mount the same way a wheel stud presses into an axle.

My first attempt bent a 6" c-clamp till the pad no longer comes into contact with the jaw. Hope this helps someone out! :thumby:  :thumby:
