1978 F-150's Are Girly Trucks
Alison bought this truck last Fall for the purpose of having a 4x4 in the snow, hauling trash to the dump, and some Mt. Lake trips. I've been slowly working on it and hope to have it on the road by first snowfall this year. The name of the game on this one is cheap. I'm digging the patina look, but she might have it painted black.
First thing I did was wire brush the frame, suspension, and axles because there was some pretty serious surface rust. Spray painted everything black. I would have liked to pull parts off blast, clean and paint, but that is beyond the scope of this project. I am happy with the results.
One of the first things I did was install Sam's old 33's that she bought. Club tire changer and BB's, cheap. I'd love to put Brayden's 35 KM2's on. It would look sweet, but not really in her budget and I don't know how sluggish it will be with 33's, stock gearing, and a sub 200hp BBF, much less with 35's.
There was some pretty bad floor rot on the passenger side once we took the carpet out. Sticking with the low cost theme, I cut it out and patched it instead of buying a new floor pan like you normally would. I was worried about the contours, but I am pleased with how it came out. Once I put the Peal N' Seal sown it will be hard to notice. Dont have any pics of the cleaned and painted floor:
This 1990 Sidekick is the machine that I first learned to weld on when I was younger, so it has been fun using it again:
Some POV of the truck:
Notice the wife looking in the window jealously at me with the mistress
I "reupholstered" the bench seat with this seat cover and some staples. Pretty nice for $20 at Wally World:
These are the cheapest monotube shocks I could find. They seem well made and have pretty good reviews. I am interested to seem how they perform. I'd bet better than their similarly priced Monroe cousins.
Ebay shorty headers. I have a set on the Bronco that I like. They don't fit past the frame, so I will be either modifying the headers or the frame. Haven't decided which yet.
I rebuilt the 2bbl Motorcraft carb over Christmas and bought this aircleaner housing because one didn't come with the truck:
Nothing hardcore, but I am excited to drive this thing int he next couple of months.

I see a lot of filler, but let's get to the important stuff. What's this thing got under the hood?

You seem to know everything, can't you figure it out by the three pictures of the engine?

Re: 1978 F-150's Are Girly Trucks
It's an FE. I assume 390 because that is what I was told and that's what I want it to be, but could be a 360. I think the only way to tell is to measure the bore (edit stroke, it's better to be long than thick, duh).4SpeedCracker wrote:Hell, IDK.
The truck originally came with a 300 according to the VIN. My understanding is that 360s were in 4x4's while 390s were in 2x4s, haven't confirmed that though. I'm sure Grubb or Terry could provide some insight

Looking good man,
The 360 and 390 are virtually identical on the outside. The best way to tell is remove a spark plug and measure the stroke. If its a 360 it will have a 3.5" stroke, a 390 is 3.78" stroke. They are good motors, I have a 360 in my '69 F-350. Just an FYI, it's very easy to turn a 360 into a 390, just need the 390 crank and rods. The pistons, flywheel, etc are all the same between them.
I guess '77s are girly trucks too (that's what Leslie has). '79s are not however....

Hahah, I was wondering what your thoughts on the girly title would be. I can't wait to be girly and drive the crap out of it.

I slapped on the sound deadening on yesterday after patching and painting the floor. It is called Peel and Seal (roof sealant), it is about 50% of the price of Dynomat and I really liked it. It didnt have a tar smell, went on easily and fit the budget of this build perfectly. I have some Dynomat to put in my truck, so I will see which I like better after I do that. I doubt I will like the Dynomat twice as much. A whole roll did about 70% of the cab, still need to do the rest of the floor and the back of the cab.

interested in how that sound deadening does, don't want to spend dynomat money but the cab of my truck is loud as piss even with a stock exhaust
