Thanks for the info

define "couple inches of stretch".....
You never know what kind of stuff they have in magical toyota land. Doublers that take up less space then a regular transfer case, stock axles that magically live up to 38.5 inch tires, 4 cylinder engines with 10 hp that can magically turn those 38.5 inch tires
Probably 2-3" front and 2-3" rear stretch

Also, post up here if you're looking for parts. I know we all have random parts laying around.
For example I've got a spare top-shift case laying in the basement of my cabin.
Have no use for it since I've never run the gear drive cases and don't have any plans to in the near future.

My dad saw this site:
http://www.suzukiconversion.com/suzuki_kits.htm
and he is now thinking about throwing a vortec in it instead of the diesel
Stock: 60 hp 77 ftlbs
1.9L TD: 100ish hp 177ftlbs
4.3L vortec: 190hp 250flbs
He would still like to run toy stuff after the engine or transmission. Do they make 200R4 to toyota TC adapters? What about 4.3L to toy 5 speeds or would the 5 speed not be able to handle the power?

plenty of people run toy stuff behind the 4.3

I dont know if you remember or not but 2 years ago there was a guy with a healthy 350 in a orange yota at Harlan just dogging it on a muddy hill climb. He had a th350 and single toy case behind the motor going to toy axles and 38s. I dont know that I would recommend that much motor but it did suprise me at how well it was staying together at the time. Advance adapters has all kinds of adapters for these type conversions whether you want to keep the chevy trans or toy trans.

Think an L52 would be fine behind the 4.3L? or should we look into some other trans then to toy TC?

I think the L52 might be a little weak. Personally if I were thinking of shoe horning in a 4.3 I would probably go with an auto (700r4 or th350). Read up on the 700r4 option I hear it can be hard to squeeze a driveshaft in next to the trans pan with narrow toy axles. If not either of these I would choose one of the other toy manuals. The R151f (turbo 4cyl trans) is a good one it is strong and has a real low first gear. But it can be hard to find and expensive. The W56 could be a relatively strong and cheap toy trans that is easy to find.
Have you looked at the toy 3RZ engine much? Its pretty stout for a 4 banger and could make fitting the engine easier.

One of the best parts of owning a toyota, is you can get parts everywhere. If it were me I would try to keep it simple with readily available parts and not build a frankenstein. As far as transmissions go, I find that its cheaper and easier to just pop a different one in rather than rebuilding them as it is usually more expensive. I prolly wouldn't stress over finding a turbo trans. It would be a good upgrade if you did run across one. The problem I see with a turbo trans, is if you did have a problem you wouldn't be able to just through another trans in because of the turbo has the larger 23 spline output. Just something to think about.

I don't know why? TH350 and TH700R4 pans are almost identical. The TH200-4R transmission was never available in 4wd, so I don't know what kind of issues you'll have coupling it to a t-case. It's lighter duty than a 700R4, but if you kept it cool, bought a good transmission reprogramming kit (Not the B&M bull) like Trans-Go, and changed the fluid like you're supposed to in a performance automatic I don't see why it wouldn't last.
Personally, I'd just run a TH350 in it. They're shorter than either the 200-4R or the 700R4 due to having one less clutch/sprag/planetary setup, are entirely clutch shifted with the band used for hold back (IE stronger/faster shifts) and much higher parts availability. With a 4.3L and a light rig like a sammy, I think somewhere in the neighborhood of 1200-1500 stall would be good to make it snappy and responsive.
Matt and I have talked about using a trans-brake on the trail to get the clutch like releases when you need to bump it. There is ALOT to know about using a trans-brake, but with stock motors and good quality torqueconverters, I think it's feasible without much risk.
I have many more thoughts on the GM automatic transmissions...

I think the problem with the trans driveshaft clearence is because of the narrow frame rails, the large dia of the driveshaft combined with a narrow axle and small tcase and the large pan size of the chevy trans. It just becomes a lot of stuff to squeeze in a small place on a leaf sprung rig.
I also agree with Stinson about not mix matching stuff too much. The beauty of the toy stuff can be the cheap used parts combined with their ability to go 200K miles with little maintainence.
If I could do it over again I would find a taco 3rz with trans and tcase and complete wiring. The only adapter needed would be for a doubler. These adapters are a little more than the regular ones but you would have a new modern driveline.

He really wants to stay manual so maybe one of the stronger toy trans would work well. We could also go with a t-18 and get a adapter to toy case behind that. We will probably just look and see what we find first.
