Evolution of my CJ7

I joined the Club on Friday. After speaking with Will, I decided to post up a post build build thread. Its always interesting to see how rigs get to where they are from where they were so here goes:

July 06 right before the teardown, had a simple plan for a 360, TF727, Waggy front and Ford 9", but we all know how "plans" go.

The teardown 2006:

Engine (AMC 360) donor vehicle, '77 Waggy:

Installation of the outboard front spring hangers:

Image

Image

Image

Switched to a set of HD D44 and FF14 Bolt axles and got them installed to the cleaned up frame.

Image

Got the engine back fro the engine shop and cleaned it up:

Image

Built a crossmember for the TF727:

Image

Image

Placed the engine and tranny on the frame:

Image

Had to repair the Tub a little, some rust in the usual place but not too bad at all. Bedlined the inside, Por 15 underneath:

Well that's it for now, will continue if interested.

Thanks guys!

Here is some more.

The date is now July of 09 (wow three years later = slow progress)

Rolled the frame outside to start putting the whole thing back together.

Image

Image

Image

After getting the tub installed, I needed to get the front clip together. Bought a set of YJ flat fenders. Turns out, the grill on a YJ is thicker than that of a CJ, didn't know that. So in order to make them work I had to modify them a bit. I think it turned out pretty good. Also got the engine together and made a new rear cross member.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Had to open up the rear wheelwell after moving the axle back. Measured for shocks and brake lines. Tractors are very useful tools.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Had a little trouble with the steering box I had installed from the "77 Waggy I stole parts from. The coupler I order ending up spinning on the input shaft of the box and ruined both. So I ended up finding a remanufactured J20 box at NAPA that had the variable ratio and the big bore. Went together rather nicely.

Image

So the cross over steering with the Hi-Steer drag link and tie rod in the original location look like they will work.

Image

I ended up using F250 shock towers front and rear.

Image

Image

Taurus 2 spd fan, tight fit.

Image

The CS144 hi amp alternator, from a Caddy (bling bling $45 at the salvage yard)

Image

The Bulltear HEI distributor

Image

And here is a picture of the mounted steering column after installing a new ignition switch.

Image

Twin stick and B&M shifter

Image

Guages installed

Image

Got the windshield installed, starting to look like a CJ again.

Image

Rolled it outside for the last time

Image

Image

Image

Image

Will post some more in a few.

Put a cage together, started with a kit and then added to it.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Got all the harness tabs installed.

Image

Harnesses installed.

Image

Image

Ut oh, setback. Ruined my cam, didn't run very well with a hole in the bottom of the lifter and the lobs of the cam wiped out.

Image

Image

Installed new Lunati cam to correct that situation. Do not use the Summitt house brake K8600 cam and lifter set - pure junk.

So that kinda brings be to now. Earlier in this thread I showed the D60 install.

Thanks for looking.

Oh yeah, I did replace my front springs over the weekend. Waggy front pack with a spring on top to help resist bending, sorry no pics.

Installed new rear springs this past weekend after bending the left one when wheeling with the NRV Jeep Club at one of the local trails called Copperhead.

I did it at work, gotta love vehicle lifts.

Maybe I should have linked it while the springs were out

Image

Here is the bent spring

Image

Image

I put an extra leaf on top of the replacement springs

Image

And put it all back together.

Image

After I get a new tranny cable, I will be ready to get back out there.

Looking good Charles. Everything is so much easier with a lift..much better than laying in the dirt. Where is copperhead trail? How is it?

Copperhead is in Pearisburg, it is a fun little trail, short like mine, but challenging.

There are some videos on the top of this page I think.
