Ok guys -- we've bashed the cops in Radford enough. Granted, you need to be careful driving there -- I had to talk my way out of a ticket a few weeks ago. My little brother is a Washington Co. Deputy and he has three brothers that drive highly modified 4x4's on the highway. Here's an example:http://laura.zerompg.com/swva2/127_2706 Most of the following was gleaned out of a conversation with him yesterday.
We have to be careful as responsible 4x4 owners/operators. Our vehicles are capable of rendering terrific damage to an unmodified passanger vehicle in a collision. We are generally running huge bumpers, lots of lift, cages, and huge tires. Our rigs can withstand damage that would completely total say, a Volkswagon Passat. In an two-car accident, it's not likely that we would be hurt. A volvo slid into me in DC during a snowstorm and totalled the car. I had to beat my bumper back out. Since a lot of people are literally afraid of and hostile to modified trucks, we must strive to maintain an image of careful responsibility. If one cop sees one of us intentionally roasting tires/intimidating another driver/running across a medium strip/any other illegal activity that our rigs allow us to perform it creates/fosters an attitude of hostility towards the 4x4 community as a whole.
If we behave responsibly, clean up trails, and maintain a positive image within the community, cops will continue to look the other way. Most of these guys are gearheads anyway -- if we keep the community from complaining about our actions, we'll be fine. We hit the 5/0's radar when the community starts complaining. So, wave at babies, nod to the cops, smile at old ladies, drive under the speed limit (we shouldn't be speeding anyway), help stranded motorists, don't tailgate, pull people out of ditches in snowstorms, and BE RESPONSIBLE! If you're a student, remember, us locals will still be here long after you are gone -- don't f#@% it up for us.
