My rear brakes don't work...

So I cheaped out on my axle swap and decided to see if the rear brakes that came on the axle would work for now since I plan to convert to disks sometime down the road but they don't work. I am figuring that the problem either lies in the wheel cylinders or the master cylinder is too small to provide enough power for the larger truck brakes.... could it be anything else?

The new axles are a dana 44 front with all new brake parts and it works great and the rear is the 9"

my money is on your stock master cylinder. id try to swap in something with a larger bore. you might want to go ahead and do the disc conversion if you can being that sometimes the rear disc kits need more fluid pushed through them than the old drums. once i get rear discs on my new rear axle, i will too have to go to a larger MC to compensate for the larger brakes.

It could be the master cylinder or depending on the age of the axles it could be the wheel cylinders. I am running a 9" with 11" drum brakes and a HP44 with 1/2 ton brakes on the stock TJ master cylinnder. When I installed the axles I was able to lock up all four 35's on the pavement. It took 2 or 3 quarts of brake fluid before I got all of the air out of the system and had good pedal feel.

If it is the master cylinder you can do a search on Pirate for what replacements will bolt in with very little modifications. I believe some people were using a Ford E-350 master and others I believe tried a durango master cylinder.

wheel cylinders are working so it must be the master cylinder.... I need to research an upgrade

Going with an E-350 master cylinder and I am gonna add a line lock to the rear line while I am at it so I can sorta have a parking break for when I get out of the heep on the trail
