Help save my buddy's YJ

'87 YJ sprung over 35 BFGs. Body is clean. He's got an AMC 290 out of an early 70's rebel, no powersteering brackets or belts avaiable. Torqueflight 727 with AMC bolt pattern... some Scout application I guess? Then a think it's a Dana 20. Thing hasn't run with this setup ever and has been off the road for 3 years now.

I need:
Decent drive train possibilitys for very little cost. I'm thinking either 4x4 blazer with 4.3 and 700r4 (not vortec) or jeep 4.2 stock auto...

Someone want this AMC stuff? Motor is supposed to be "built" out of a pink CJ5 that was totaled.

It's got a drivers side drop front 44... so I think I've gotta switch that for soemthing to get it to join the rest of the world and figure out the steering. It's got some :rainbow: spring perch so the high steer arm needs some spacer to clear the springs. I'm going to use rear XJ springs to get another 4" on the wheelbase so we can have a little room for the drive shafts.

Help save this thing... this pile will be towed down to the house here soon.

Thanks
Chris

Might consider flipping a D300 instead of swapping front axles.

Not a bad idea... I guess a Dana 300 would probably be cheaper than trying to swap and sell the current front axle...

any thought's on a non-vortec 4.3?

Sorry, don't know anything about them.

What lug pattern are the axles? Is he looking to upgrade the rear axle too? I can't remember if he did Waggy 44s or what.

pull the drive line from late 80's S-10.... 4.3L tbi, 700R4 and NP231 drivers drop.... easy as pie stuff.

Ary 6 lug. I think they are the waggy 44s. Just under full width. Don't need an upgrade... just need to get it driving.

Terry, that's what I was thinkin. I've been looking at it a little bit and the 4.3s are showing 75 horsepower less than a 350 and with the jeep not being too heavy I think it'd be a decent possiblilty with the plan of going to propane in the future. I guess the powerband is probably a little higher but I can't see how it'd be too much different than the Toy's with the 20Rs and the 3.slows. Was it just the S10s? or did the blazers get the same deal?

blazers are the same thing..... and propane blows donkey nuts.... stick with fuel injection! :thumby:

if you can get a fuel injected motor stick with it. no not rip all that out for pain, not worth. Now if you have a carb then its something you can look into.

I didn't realize that all 4.3s were TBI... definately no reason to tear that out. Found a 700R now looking for the 4.3...

Also found that the front diff is a damn passenger side drop. Standard Chevy is?

XJ rear leafs stretch the wheel base 4" right? anyone? Easy way to sneak another 2-3" out of the front? Off set center pin on the leaves?

NP231 is DS drop from S-10. I think NP241's in the K trucks?

The 700R I found is out of an '88 fullsize so I'll either have 231 or 208 either of which could be passenger drop. bummer on the slip yoke but we'll roll with it.

OK, pardon the stupid Dana axle questions.

Can you machine the non flat top knuckles for high steer arms (brace yourself for the tech jargon) some have the three holes in an arc and others look like they have 4 in a square pattern... incorrect pictures?

If not anyone have a passenger flattop knuckle? And/or access to machine specs for the flattop?

The spring perch is set into the diff a little so I have to either run a spacer or WFO makes a "tall" arm that looks pretty slick, then just run crossover.

GM New Process 231 Transfer Case

Most of these units will be right hand drop, but Chevy also used a few left hand drop applications. The Chevy NP231 is supplied with a 27 spline female input.

Chevy 208

Passenger side drop (front driveshaft). This Tcase has the GM rotation of the 6 bolt circular bolt pattern.

27 spline: The units supplied with a T350 or 700R4 automatic have a 27 spline female input shaft.

I assume that right hand drop is passenger right?

I dont know..... but I do know S-10's and K1500-3500's from 88-present are all Drivers Drop. I knsw this because on my dad's K1500 (93) the front DS makes it a bitch to change the oil filter. also, the S-10's use the same parts and are all drivers drop. the early ones relocated the oil filter to the DS fender on a remote mount filter block to make room for the front drive shaft. the late ones are mounted the filter behind the front skidplate for the same reason.

conclusion: get a flash light and go walking around B-Burg at night looking.
