I have taken out my old distributor, an aftermarket accel, and replaced it with a stock distributor. I then called the guy I bought this 87 wrangler from to learn he took out the computer and the set up that was in it is what's going to work. I have replaced all I have taken out. When I turn the motor it is real sluggish. The battery is not even 2 months old but it was recharged anyway. I have been working on this all week and have gotten nowhere. I live at Terrace View and my Jeep has become a permanent resident here. Is there anyone who knows about these things for the 258 motor? If your into food, beer or perhaps even cash I really need this thing to run and it appears I need some help to do this. My home number is 552-1245 and my cell is 614-406-3596. Please give me a call,

I can't see how the motor turning over sluggish would be related to the distributer (butchered the spelling there...).

Find your #1 cylinder (check your haynes manual or maybe even owners manual) and follow that plug wire back to it's "spot" on the dizzy. Take out that plug and have someone bump the starter until you get the piston to the top of it's stroke. (You should be able to put a screw driver in through the hole where the plug came out and rest it on top of the piston and be able to feel the motion from there. If you "plug" the hole with your thumb you will also feel it building pressure this will let you know that you're on the combustion stroke not the exhaust stroke.

Now put the distributer back in so that the rotor is pointing at the same location as the plug wire for the #1 cylinder. and slide the distributer in until it meshes with the gear on the crank. Tighten everything up and go from there.

If it catches but runs poorly adjust the timing by rotating the distributer. If you've got backfiring through the carb take the distributer out and rotate one tooth one direction or the other.

I had a lot of trouble with mine when I swapped it out and finally got some help (I was off by a tooth... )

Thanks, I've actually gone through and done that but now have no spark, I'm hoping it's the electronic coil, everything else is new. It's turning but not firing. This thing is killing me.

That happened to my friend a while ago we place the distributer back but the problem still persists.
