I have an idea. (it might be a stupid one)

Since my truck's current top speed is about 55mph, its become apparent that an overdrive system would be really nice. Even so, I'm not about to shell out $1000+ for a real overdrive system....So I got to thinking. Could I install a divorced transfer case backwards behind the primary case and connect it only to the rear end. I guess I would have to shift it into gear before I started the trip. Do you think the gearing would be too extreme to get the truck moving? Would the case explode from the extreme speeds in reverse? Anyone have any input?

why not just throw some 37s on it to"equal out" the 4.56s?

I've got some 36s on the way, but I just wanted to ask. I didn't really think it would work, but it had an outside chance.

how about manning up and realizing that with 4.56's its not how fast you get there but the fact that you WILL get there.....

Two feasible plans here...

(1) Bigger tires

(2) 4L80

Your choice, but I guarantee you bigger tires will be cheaper. You already knew the answer to this question.

Honestly...A backward run transfer case? You're killing me tsmall....

I cant believe I am posting in this thread.

Even if it was feasible to do a 'reversed-divorced-mounted tcase' do you really think you could do it for less that $1000? By the time you purchace the case, make sure it is in good condition (rebuild if necessary), spend the money and time on materials to mount the thing, then re-do the cross member because you will screw it up the first time, you will be way over $1000.

Maybe this belongs in its own post, but we're talking about it, so...

My 700R4 exploded a few weeks ago. I had it rebuilt and I'm happy with it, but I'm running 39.5 IROKs...who knows how long it will last!!?

So, I staggered into a 4L80E for free. How do you hook it up if there isn't a computer?

I'm pretty sure someone like TCI or Jet Performance makes a plug-in kit that will override the computer to make it shift without input from an engine management computer. I've been looking for it but I can't find it. Hopefully a bowtie-head will chime in with the part number.

Here's a link to the TCI stand alone unit. A quick search tells me there is also a way to convert it to full manual without a computer but I'm not sure what that entails.

The part number of the full manual kit is 4L80E-3 made by Transgo.

I've heard on the CK5 message boards that there is a way to convert it to full manual, but I haven't really searched to see how. Seeing the posting here just kind of jogged my memory that I have the heavier duty transmission lying around.

Yes, it will work.. And it has been done. Your particular idea is a little ghetto, but if u got it mounted well and all the vibes out of your d'lines and could get going from a stop it'd work fine. The tcase would survive no sweat.

There were a few guys back in the day that ran doublers with backwards 203's inbetween the tranny and tcase to make up for the deep gearing of portals.

If you did it it would remind everyone of that junky ranger leach had.

I am running the TCI stand alone controller. You have to buy the computer and then the TPS sensor seperatly.

Also you have to relocate the crossmember because the 4L80E is 3 inches longer which means you have to lengthen the front drive shaft and shorten the rear. Also if you want to retain the stock shifting linkage you will need to by some 3/8" round stock and fab up a longer linkage. And also you will have to lengthen the T-case shifter linkage.

But all in all it is a fairly easy swap and well worth it in the end.
