That's the sound I imagine it made. It's not as bad as I first suspected. One of the ring gear bolts came out, not the bearing cap bolt as I originally feared. Notice the nice hex shape of the dents in the cover. It punched all the way through.

soo, I need a new diff cover obviously. what's the current crowd favorite for a HD cover?

well I just ordered one for cheap off eGay before your post. I found enough good reviews on them so for $65 shipped I went with it. my gut tells me it will keep my gear oil cooler than a flat 3/8" plate cover will.
