Sinking Creek 4WD Association

So my little truck is making some noises. Sounds like a leaf in the heater in all gears except 4th and only under load, which is what Stinson mentioned his truck sounded like when the timing chain guides had gone bad. So... I think that is the problem, but I'm a welder-fab guy not an engine guy so any help would be appreciated. I'm going to pull the valve cover tomorrow and check for wear on the timing chain cover and spec out the guides.

I figure I'll get a timing kit with steel backed guides and just replace everything up front while I've got it torn down.

Does anyone have any wisdom/advice on this?

Does anyone have a place I can work on my junk next week?

Anyone willing to help me out and teach me a little bit for some beers and chow?

Anyone got an extra seat for the cleanup this weekend, as I probably shouldn't drive?

does it do when you are out of gear lightly reving the engine?

Absolutely! They're in my cab so I wouldn't forget to give them back to you, look how well that worked.

Stinson, nope, only noticed it when in gear, I'll check tomorrow, but so far only noticed it when the truck is moving in gear (except fourth), not when coasting in neutral. but I'll check it in the driveway tomorrow.

Second the notion that only in gear points downstream of the engine...

Nope not at a particular rpm. sounds like a playing card in bike spokes. only occurs when gas pedal is depressed, in gear, and noise frequency increases with rpm. noticeable in all gears except fourth. No power loss, still shifts easily. I can't reproduce the noise stationary in the driveway.

I'll take a peak and see if it's anything obvious with the transmission.

Any other ideas ?

I also don't know jack about 'yotas, but you might look into a blown engine/ trans mount. My XJ did something similar a while back, where the u-joint on the tail of the t-case would slap against the body due to being pushed sideways.
