22re with hacked wiring

I have a friend who purchased an early 90s yota a 93 I believe. The engine was replaced around 2001 by some jackleg who cut up the wiring. The truck has been running fine with no check engine light. Recently the check engine light came on so he took it to the stealership and they scanned it and said there was no knock sensor and no wire or plug for the sensor. Which does not make sense to me it would seem if it was not there there would have been problems all along. They recommended a new harness at the tune of 1500$. My question is how difficult would it be to patch in a sensor and did all 22res come with knock sensors. He is eady to just pay Toyota to do the work but I thought I would check here to see what you guys think. I know very little about the re and all of this type of crap makes me like carbs even more. There could also be an opportunity for someone to make some money if they think they could fix it.
Did a little research and it does not seem too dificult to fix as long as you can trace down the correct wire in the harness.

The only 22RE's that didn't have knock sensors are 83-84 celicas and 84 2wd pickups. I'd be happy to take a look at it as long as its not 30 degrees out.
If it comes down to it, I have a complete 91 EFI here in Blacksburg. I'll sell him everything or just the harness and knock sensor.

Thanks for the offer Matt.
I think he is going to bring it up this sat. I am hoping that its just needs a wire run from the harness to the sensor.
Would you be willing to part with the sensor if needed?
Also am I right in saying the KS is just above and to the left of the oil filter kind of hiding under the intake. And if so what is just to the left of the oil pressure sending unit on an re?
On my 22r there is an oil pressure sending unit and to the left of that an oil pressure switch. One for an actual gauge and the other for the idiot light. But mine was an SR5 that has both from the factory and his is not.

Its just above the left of the oil filter and to the lower front of the fuel filter. My oil pressure sensor is below the oil filter so the knock sensor isn't close to it.
I sent you a PM about picking up the knock sensor.

Thanks for the info. After thinking about it a little more I may know what is going on. Last sat he pulled the starter because it was acting up intermittently but the starter was ok. Fixed some bad grounds and battery cables and now the ECU is throwing a knock sensor code. Maybe the wire got pulled off of the sensor? There are 2 or 3 wires that go no where on the pass side of the block. They all look to have been cut and have new wire spliced on at some point. Some tie into the harness others go back through the firewall to? Guess we need to figure out what these wires are.

That makes more sense. If its missing the knock sensor, it should have been throwing codes since the day he got the truck.
There are 3 plugs for an auto tranny that hang down behind the block on the passenger side on earlier EFI. I'm not sure if later harnesses are the same though.
