Injector cleaning and balancing

Post by yotacowboy »

Figured I'd write a little bit about my latest minor project:

about 3 years ago I bought a 22re RV longblock off of Tim @ DOA Racing. Not built to the hilt, but bored .060 over, hypereutectic pistons, moly rings, ported head with oversized valves, metal backed timing chain guides, higher flow oil pump and a Thorley header. I swapped over all my EFI junk including my old injectors.

Due to the fact that i'm running the hypereutectic pistons, my engine is a little more sensative to engine knock/detonation. essentially hypereutectics are slightly more brittle than regular cast pistons, google if you want more info... anyway I've always been a bit leery of running lower octane (87) and noticed when running at higher RPM's (3000 and higher) for longer than 15 or 20 seconds or so I do develop some knock (presumably due to higher cylinder temps caused by old/clogged/sticking injectors running the cylinders lean).

I had heard about a company on PBB called Cruzin' Performance up in Michigan and decided to do something about my old injectors (about 180,000 miles on them). I pulled the injectors and packed them according to the website, sent them off last monday.

This Friday i got them back. honestly i couldn't tell the difference between my old injectors and a new set of injectors (neither could several guys at work)... they were spotless and polished, with all new seals and filters. Cruzin' Performance also sent me a link to my before and after flow rates and spray patterns. Before cleaning I measured (in a 100 cc dump on a flow bench) 88 cc, 87cc, 86cc, and 46cc. I would guess (no shit...) that the 46cc injector was causing my lean condition. After balancing, my injectors are at 100cc, 100cc, 100cc and 99cc for a 100cc dump, with good spray patterns and no leakdown.

Now here's the best part:

this cost me $12 ea. plus shipping.

These guys do kick ass work for dirt f-ing cheap. I popped the injectors back in and am happy to report (after dealing with a leaky cold start injector) that the knock is gone, and my junk will rev happily to 6 grand without any stuttering. power is a good bit better using the "seat-of-the-pants" dyno i've got.

Moral of the story: if you're smart enough to run an EFI engine (ahem... stallings...) and have a few miles on your junk, send your injectors to Cruizin'. good stuff, Treehugger approved. not to sound too much like an ad for these guys, but honestly they do great work for real cheap.

bwahaha on the Stallings thing. Just dont post pics in this thread or he'll never get it to load. Dude it all about the outdated stuff.

Glad to hear the truck likes the high rpms again. Care to lend out the keys during freshman move in day? Gotta welcome the newbies to tech the right way.

reviving an old thread here...

I just sent my injectors out to this place. Turns out they were all in good shape already, but the numbers still show about a 5% increase in flow across the board after the cleaning, so not a total waste.

now still looking for the what's causing it to miss...

one thing i learned while diggin around: check your grounds...

the injector harness (on 22re's) likes to have good grounds. i'm sure this goes for most efi engines, too.

well now I'm worse off than I was. got everything back together and fired it up and it's got a weak cylinder or something. it's got a consistent shudder to it- not like the engine's gonna stall, but it's just not running smooth like it should and there's a definite odd sound to the exhaust.

at least I got my leaky valve covers patched up, but if I have to tear it all down again in that fucking parking lot I'm gonna be pissed. gonna run some diagnostics tonight when I get home.

that is what I'm hoping for- that one of the plug wires got damaged during R&R.

FIXED

I am an idiot.

Went through all the EEC4 self-tests. No codes, except for EGR but my engine doesn't have that "feature" so duh.

Started pulling plug wires... no drop in rpm when pulling cylinders 5 or 6.

Wow... 2 dead cylinders... suspicious.

Sure enough, looked CLOSER at the diagram in the shop manual and I had the wires for 5 and 6 switched.

But in my own defense- the arrangement on the coil pack makes no sense...

it goes:

3 4
2 6
1 5

and I read it as

3 4
2 5
1 6

I'm surprised it didn't run even worse than it was on 4 out of 6 cylinders.

I need a beer.

guess you found a new way to save gas on the highway, kinda like that MDS thing that the new Dodge Hemis have. maybe?
