Ok I know nothing about jeeps. By bosses YJ with a 2.5l 4cyl seems to have eaten the trans. How reliable is this transmission? Anyway looking for a cheap used tans to put in its place. THanks

the ax-15's are decent trannys and worth replacing with another one.....i think you could get these behind a 2.5

come awn Will where is your input I know you sit on the forum and hit refresh all day long

haha i do i do, my laptop is out of comission right now and so i have to resort to the pc's whenever i get a break in the shop. im had to cut back to only a few times a day.

behind the 2.5 is an ax-5. They're ok but if his is done now would be a good oppurtunity to step up to an ax-15 if he wants to. He'll need a different bellhousing, i believe a dakota 4 cyl. its the same motor as the jeep but comes with an ax-15. The dakota is external slave whereas the jeeps are internal but thats actually a pretty straight forward change. You need new clutch discs to match the larger inner diameter on the splines. The ax-15 is a little longer so he'll need to adjust driveshafts accordingly and an ax15 is 23 spline output and ax-5 is 21, so he'll need a new case.

The more expensive but easier route would be to call AA and tell them what you want, theyve got everythign so there would be no part hunting, though the shafts will still need to be changed as well as the t-case.

Or he could grab another cheap ax5 and slam it in and call it good, though it is a piece of junk really. (cant say too much though, mines still alive)

The AX-5's are trash. My dad is on his 2nd or 3rd in his '92 YJ with the 2.5L and he's running a Rancho 2.5" suspension with 31" BFG A/T's. He finally broke down and bought a NV4500 and all the adapters to go in. I'd recommend going the NV4500 route if the funds are there if not, the AX-15 is a good option.

I've got an AX-5 sitting in a barn I would sell for $200. Also if his YJ is a 95 the slave cylinder would be external so the Dakota/AX-15 swap wouldn't be as involved, there is a lot of write-ups on it on www.jeepforum.com

The snap-ring that holds the 5th gear on its shaft gave up on it and I didn't know what happened at the time so I just picked up another trans to put in mine. Apparently it is a pretty common problem with the AX-5, the gear just slips back on the shaft and then you've got a 4-speed. I went back and replaced the snap ring and now all the gears work.
