cj6 brainstorm

ok so this summer i think im finally gunna be able to start the cj6 i want to keep it fairly stock maybe take it up a little bit, axles possibly motor the works etc.. its a 64 101 in wheelbase i think, and the 134 f-head. if anyone has any ideas throw them at me we all know most of yall know alot more than me lol....... (motor still runs so not necessarily trashin but want other options) let me know what yall think

Just restoring it to original would be sweet since they're so rare.

yea thats kinda what im thinkin, but they really sucked from the factory so id like to change it up a little bit

Like what? It's worth more the way it is than if you change anything. I'd add lockers to it, run the largest tires you can fit w/o trimming and go have some fun!

If it's in good shape and you want to build a wheeler, fix it up a little, sell it for a handsome price, then start from scratch with a reproduction tub. No point in destroying an original that's worth something when you can get the same look with modern components the way you want it.

i dont want it to be a wheeler by any means, the reason i said axles etc is that alot of shit on it is trashed like the axles i dont wanna run them so im trying to figure out the best thing to do, ive been looking at tubs online to see if it would cost more to fix mine or buy a new one and still havent made any decisions new ones run about 3,000 from jc whitney so i wont be buying one from then if anyone knows any places to get them cheaper let me know, .... and trow of course it will have mud tars

I have no idea how much they cost, but Aqualu makes aluminum tubs, and I'm pretty sure they just released a CJ-6 tub. Probably $$$, but they are P I M P!

It'll cost you as much or more to replace the axles vs. rebuilding and updating them. Add one piece rear shafts, re-gear to something that will run out well with your gears, and you'll be good to go. If you buy different axles, you still have to re-gear and re-seal them (if you want them to last), you'll probably have to narrow them and put mounts on them to match your spring widths.

good point terry, the main part that worries me is it is sprung over so the mounts have already been cut and re-welded once but i guess i could do it again with alot of very careful grinding, i just worry about grinding to deep nahhhhhhhhhhhhh meeeeeeeeeeen

Yeah, but if it's already sprung over and not a $h!tty job, I'd leave it like that and re-gear to match some tires that will fit good.

Do you plan to go back to spring under? Also, grinding into the tube really isn't that big of a deal, you just weld up the gouge and grind it smooth. If you dont trust the mounts, new spring perches are very cheap.
A new tub for a 6 is going to cost you more than the others since they are rarer and therefore sell less. Unless your tub is shot I imagine you'll be better off repairing it.

We can all tell you how to spend your time and money, but until there's a clear objective for the rig, I don't think you'll get a consensus. If you see yourself building this into a medium-hardcore wheeler in the future, I wouldn't waste time rehabing the stock axles. With that said, if you plan to make this a cool Sunday driver/grocery getter, the stock axles will be plenty.

Building it right the first time is SOOO much cheaper than building it 4 different times to end up with what you knew you wanted in the first place ;) :mrgreen:

the only reason i want to spring it back under is because you would not belive now much bigger it made it, it cleared 37 x-terrains, but i guess we will see how the summer goes and what happens
