Recently, my Jeep's developed an unsettling screeching noise under the hood. It appears to be coming from the A/C compressor. I know a likely culprit could be the fan clutch, I'm gonna check that once it's cooled down. The Jeep also got hot as shit today on the highway in traffic, so maybe that's it. But, I'm reading about the A/C compressor/pulley clutch/bearings going bad and making a whining/screeching noise.

Anybody deal with such an issue?

Definitely not the fan clutch, it's the A/C compressor/clutch/pulley.

Id say that your bearings are going bad, that happened with my smog pump earlier this year. You can take a piece of radiator hose to use as a stethoscope on each individual accessory to make sure its the ac compressor. Watch it because the pulley is likely to seize up and youll be stranded ins fishersville and have to call Jake to come get you, oh wait...

Yeah that's what worries me. Noise sounds horrible. All I would need is for that to seize and the jeep to shit the bed.

I seized the AC clutch on the cruiser once, resulted in a small underhood fire and a thrown belt. Fortunately for me, Toyota used to be awesome and used 3 v-belts instead of 1 serpentine. So I just put the fire out and drove it without AC for another 3 years

I went out and got a serpentine belt for a 4.0L without A/C, with the hopes that it will fit right on there bypassing the A/C. By the looks of it, it should work.

Maybe I should upgrade to full coverage and drive it like hell till the clutch seizes and the whole thing catches on fire. Could be like a game.

Bring me that belt and take the compressor off mine

I appreciate the offer James. Unfortunately, I think I'm gonna put the belt on now to prevent future catastrophe. Maybe we can work somethin out though, if it wouldn't be too much a pain in the ass to swap the compressor. I'm sure we'd have to fuck with the freon, that could be fun.

since its R134, shouldn't cost you much to have it evaced twice, then refill it yourself. Just find a shop that won't try to rape you for it.

I have a set of manifold gauges for filling and charging if you guys decide to do it.

Belt for 4.0L without A/C works like a charm.

Go and pick up a can of R-134 with an oil charge. Put a can of that in the system while the Jeep is running with the A/C on and see if that helps. Most of the time an oil charge will lube the bearings up and you'll be okay. I'd try that first.
