Welding to cast trick

Just finished bracing my current pitman arm since i seem to like bending them these days and found a pretty good trick to help with the whole cooling rate issue between the mild steel and cast steel. Of course started with preheating the piece as normal with welding to cast. Then welded every seam got it hot as hell and threw it in a 5 gallon bucket surrounded with oil quick dry hoping that it would help cool both pieces at the same rate. 5 hours later i came back and tried to pick up the piece and it was still way to hot to handle and couldnt pick it up for about 8 hours. So any case that your welding mild to cast if you can fit it in a 5 gallon bucket this seems to be the best possible method i have found.
sorry if this is common knowledge and everyone knows this. Also sorry for the typos im sure there are some
