The Cowboy Cadillac

I have always liked the first generation Cummins trucks. So, in true fashion, I bought a clapped out one from our buddy, Gilby :lol2:

I am not sure what I will be doing with this as of yet, but I am either going to put some work and money into it and sell it or keep it as a DD/future project. I like parts of the rat rod fad and this has the right patina going on, so I could see something not too gaudy along those lines.

How it looked when I first bought it:

I didn't like the chrome steps or visor, so off they came. $20 for them if anyone wants :flipoff2:

Had Safelite come replace the broken windshield, took it to get inspected, it failed lol:

One of the things it failed for was 3 bald retread tires. I just bought six new ones because forget that mix matching crap. Really like the Falken AT3W's so far. My size (235/85/16E)was $125 a piece on Prime;

Had Firestone mount them after a bit of trouble convincing them to mount 235's on the rear that came with 215's;

The steering is pretty sloppy. I have new tie rods and draglinks painted waiting for install.
Rear brake hardware is waiting for install too.
I'd like to do some power additives, but I am about at my budget right now with the tires and misc small purchases. We shall see about a fuel pin.
Changed the oil the other day, cleaned airfilter, cleaned interior, got 17.5 MPG on a trip to Richmond. Has only broke down once so far and it was a bad connection on the fuel shutoff solenoid which I was able to fix in 20 min on the side of the highway in Appomatox County.
Will post more pictures of interior, engine bay, and more as I work on it some more.

I thought you just pull a fuel restrictor plate? Or something like that.

The fuel pin controls the fueling curve of the pump, the star wheel, the "smoke screw", and "power screw" are all adjustments made around this fueling pin. This is what I've gathered from the little bit of research and chit chatting I have done.

I think you have to have stacks to adjust your smoke screw properly :eek: :eek: :eek:

Also I think your power screw belongs in your vise not your truck...

shut up sam you are an idiot.

Ended up selling it to Andrew Jones who is one here, so hopefully he will keep up the build thread. Too many projects, not enough time and money. Don't want to be that guy with shit sitting around that never gets attention/finished :flipoff2:

So far I have not done a whole lot to the truck.

I have replaced the headlights with some h4 units and LED bulbs that are surprisingly good. While I was in there I replaced all the adjustment screws with new ones and replaced all the hardware with proper stuff. There were some decking screws holding the drivers side light into place.

I also replaced both front speakers with CTsounds 6x9's. While the doors were apart I busted out the epoxy, fixed all the clips and the drivers side arm rest. Now the door panels are properly secured and feel much better.

I still have not gotten the truck inspected. I took it for an alignment and the tech came back and said he wouldn't align it until I repaired the steering shaft. So I ordered a new Borgeson unit and a rag joint to go with it and put that in. Took it back and had it aligned and it drives a million times better now. Still needs brake work, I have made an ebrake bracket but still need to make an equalizer for the cables that go to the rear wheels. Planning to go to my grandpas shop today and knock out the remaining brake work and get it inspected this week I hope.

Do you have the VIN written down for the Cummins? I want to see how many owner it had, and the history. Apparently, it has made its way along numerous owners.

Wrong thread! But, I don't think so, just looked at DMV account. It's no longer there and my spreadsheet doesn't have it. Should start doing that.

Fixed, on the right thread now. I'll have to ask Andrew if he still has it.
