need help with transmission (97 TJ chrystler 999 tranny)

so my tranny problems are back for good it seems.

BG: got stuck in 1st at Uwharrie and a computer reset fixed it. once back i dropped the pan and changed the tranny fluid (there was some nasty clutch material and metal shavings in the pan  ... it also stuck in 1st when i had to tow Grubbs heavy ass off of bobcat .... computer reset fixed the problem.)

...

went wheeling on sunday night in the snow on bobcat and spent a good amount of time in bronco hole with the tranny under about 97 feet of water. got off the trail just fine and got to 460.

stuck in 1st gear.

pull over and pull the battery cable to reset the computer (this has worked weekly for me since the Uwharrie trip) and i get to 2nd gear. no 3rd or OD

wake up this morning and drive the jeep with the tranny cold - stuck in 1st with nasty slip

warm up the tranny - stuck in 1st with nasty slip

reset the computer - stuck in 1stwith nasty slip

so i borrow a friends car and get parts and drop the pan again. there is some water in the fluid and some and the old filter was stuffed full of nasty shit (mud, debris, etc).

new filter, new fluid, 1 bottle of Lucas Tranny fix, computer reset leaves me with 1st and 2nd with hard shifts when cold

drive to Advance and back to dump old fluid

once warm, it slips like whoadamnit in 1st

im fucking stumped. computer resets change nothing. slipping like a fat bitch on a treadmill in 1st gear ...

im going now to clean the old speed sensor / put in a new one ...

thats kinda what my tranny was doing before it went to hell and was rebuilt. i forgot what the exact part is called, but its what forces the fluid into and out of the torque converter. that may not be exactly right, as this was about 6 or 7 months ago.

it started with the OD popping off going 70mph down the highway. turned to truck off for a couple min, OD was working again. bout 15 min later that bitch started slipping like your "fat bitch on a treadmill" and soon after that i pulled over and that was it. not goin anywhere, forward or reverse.

does it make any weird noises? i noticed mine was making the dust cover noise again after bobcat saturday

lemme know if you need a hand and f'in with your heep

no noises from the tranny that i can hear. runs fine in 2nd and in the higher RPMs of 1st so i wouldnt think it would the the Torque Converter...

thanks for the help, it will probably come out this weekend and get rebuilt.

I've always heard that once a good amount of clutch material comes off the bands and into the fluid, you're better off not changing the fluid. reason being the friction material floating in the fluid is all that's keeping the clutch bands operational.

granted once you get water in it, it's gonna need changing, and my contribution helps you in no way at all.

but in the background you forgot the time you pulled a FS truck off bobcat.

lol....edited for accuracy

the fluid needed to be changed both times as there was water in the fluid each time .... the most recent having more water than the last...

just did a computer self diagnostic (key on, off, on, off, on) and it showed no codes except for 12 (PCM power recently disconnected).

does anyone have access to, or know anyone with access to a programmer for a 97 jeep?

Cody, the obvious thing to do is put clutch material back into the fluid! Duh! I would try some sand first, if that doesn't work, well, the tranny was fucked anyway, right?

Sounds like time for an AW4 swap to me.

ill try the sand, but it might the particles might be too small ... if it doesnt work, ill try fine gravel :flipoff2:

fuck the AW4, if im swapping trannies, im putting in an AX15

my transmission shifts fine when i push the pedal (the one all the way on the left) towards the floor (with my foot) and move the stick/lever thingy (with the numbers on it) sticking out of the floor back and forth. sorry, can't help you. :???:

got it shifting again.

after fucking with it all i day i finally pulled every electrical connection i could reach and sprayed them out with brake cleaner and then let them dry for an hour (speed sensor was packed full of mud and general shit)... filled them all with di-electric grease to keep any future moisture moisture out of the connection ....

took the jeep out to 460 with full intention of making the tranny shift or blowing up the motor trying ...

first time around it stumbled and tried to shift into 3rd about 4500 rpm (maybe 50% throttle, not dogging it)...

second time around i opened it up and it shifted ahrd into 3rd at about 5300 (past redline for the poor 242) ....

drove it around for the last 20 minutes with as much speed variation as possible and it is better ... definitely not like new, but at least i have all my gears now. may still rebuild it this weekend as it still has some nasty slip in low rpm 1st gear...

any help would be appreciated ... i think i alread conned Terdonkadonk (TerryD) into helping me rebuild it ... he might even have a few tricks up his sleeve in making it shift even better than before

I was gonna suggest swaping to a manual.

I got the ax-15 in my jeep for $75

i will probably rebuild the 666 tranny, buy the AX15 and everything else i need for the auto -> manual swap, and then sell the 666 tranny as a rebuild (since it will be rebuilt)

One word of warning, if you let him make it shift "firm" it will be more like the front end comes off the ground when it shifts. I rode in his S-10 that he did some shift mods to, your head would bounce off the back glass everytime that thing grabbed a gear. :flipoff2: J/K though, he knows his auto trannies inside and out, he tried for months to get me to run a C6 in my '79 but I like the ol 4spd.
