question on transporting a newly purchased vehicle

if you buy a vehicle from a private party, is there a way to transport it home before going through DMV for registration, tags, etc? the scenario- we're buying a box truck in NC. we will go down, exchange money, get title, bill of sale, etc. we'd prefer to bring the truck back that day, then go to VA DMV to transfer registration and get tags. is there some special exception that allows this to be done with a newly purchased vehicle, or are we going to have to make two trips?

that is what I am doing for a truck I am looking at.

Basically as long as you use it within 15 days of getting the permit you are good.

You coudl buy the truck and wheel bobcat before ever getting tags on it.

Maybe I'm a little behind the times, but we've always just called our insurance company and told them the VIN # and they gave us a couple day grace period. Then we just grab a tag off the front of one our vehicles, throw it on the back of the newly acquired vehicle, and high tail it home. Done probably 6 or 7 cars this way w/o a problem. Always figured if we explained to an officer what the deal was and that we did indeed have insurance on the vehicle that it wouldn't be a problem. There must still be some reasonable cops out there, no?

The transport tags are from the purchase location to your house/garage are only for a three day period. State Farm gives us a 30 day window to report the purchase/regirstration of another vehicle when in they will insure it.

You tape this transport tag inside the rear window and need to have the signed title in hand to be legal.

I used the 3-day permit to get the samurai home. But, I bought it in VA. I don't think the VA permit would mean much in NC... better than nothing, though.

we figured that it had to be cool for out of state... i mean when you get the permit online it lets you give an out of state address. regardless, we brought the truck home today with the transport permit and had no issues.
