Setting up a CJ7 on a 79 F150 frame

Post by HokieJeep »

I am looking to get ideas on the set up to put under my 84 CJ, I am going to buy a 79 F-150 with a HP 44 front and a 9 inch rear. After acouple other suggestions I decides to scrap the CJ frame and use the F150 frame and suspention and just move the back end up (by either moving the rear springs forward and cutting the rear or cutting a center section out to shorten the wheel base.
Any input or suggestions on what drive train to run or any suspention mods to do let me know. I was thinking of doing a chevy 350 under the hood to a t-18a/dana 300?
Any ideas?

I'll sell you the drive train out of my '80 f150. 302 (have to rebuild), t18, some t-case (can't remember). Why not run a furd motor since thats what it was designed to hold. It would be a lot easier to not have to change the motor mounts.

I just got screwed by the guy who was suppost to sell me the f150. So I am back to the drawing board. If anyone knows where I can get a junk f150 or something else that would be good to put a CJ tub on, let me know.

I've got one, but you'd have to weld the frame. Its a 1980 frame so its TTB but I also have a d44 for sale. OH yea and there is no rear axle.

just a thought.... if your planning on running a chevy motor (so new mounts right?) and sectioning some of the frame out.... why not just build a frame from scratch? then you wont have to worry about finding a good donor and fitting a jeep body to it. just build a new jeep frame. as im sure you know they are fairly simply and wouldnt require an obsurd amount of metal to do. just my .02 cents.

I have a friend with a junk Bronco I'll try to contact this sat. This is a real easy swap with no frame sectioning just move spring hangers and cut off back. Motor mounts will have to be made anyhow because the eng has to be set back about a foot. bottom of this page http://www.jeepstuff.8m.com/photo2.html

Looks like I am back in buisness. I am going to take a look at the truck this weekend. Looks like the other guy is dragging his feet, so I might have this truck by the Daytona 500 weekend.
If I get it, I am going to be looking to move some things like a C6 tranny and a 205 transfer case. I will post things once I get the truck here and apart.

The f-150 has a 429 big block in it that runs! Actually, everything in the truck ran when it was parked. Is it possible to swap out the C6/NP205 with a T-18A/Dana300 combo? Also, what suspention set up would people recomend? I was going to upgrade the springs and wanted to find something that has alot of flex.

Which one is it?
I think I might go with a rough country 4" lift with the new rear springs. I have heard good things about Rough Country. Anyone run them?

Lift kits ,in general, are a waste of money in my opinion. I used to sell/install them.
