noise in 4wd

Post by Brett »

I have been hearing a noise while in 4hi in my bronco. I ran it with hubs locked in 2wd and did not hear the noise. I ran it in 4wd with hubs not locked and did not hear the noise. I ran in 4wd hi with hubs locked and after I get up to about 20-25 mph and decelerate i hear this "chattering" type noise. I replaced a u joint in the drivers side axle shaft that had almost spit a cap out and thought that might be the problem, but i was wrong. Any body have any suggestions?

It sounds to me like slack in the chain in the transfer case. My CJ does that all the time, but it's old and crappy and has a gear driven case.

Just my thoughts, but I've been wrong before...
