Toyota Engine Knock
Moderator: Club Officers
Yeah the truck runs fine
The noise is a knocking sound, very loud, on start up and gets faster as you rev the motor.....just as a rod bearing would. Acceleration deceleration idliing everything.....
Then after you have driven a while, the noise will go away sometimes, sometimes it wont.......it's completley erratic.

MTN Toys- Even if I rebuild Stinsons motor I will still buy yours.......never hurts to have options.....
Stinson does your motor have this feature apparently I can only use an 85-95 22RE or 22R block as the deck height was different in 83-84, seems like I remember your truck is an 86 with the stock motor right?

Ok Guys-
While changing the oil in the truck today, just for grins I cranked it after I was done and crawled under.
I am almost certain the knock noise I heard is coming from the bell housing or transmission..........
Any ideas what that might be? the only thing in the bell housing could be a throw out bearing or clutch.....I've never heard either make the noise I'm hearing?
Again I'm lost.

im not sure what you could be hearing in that area. Were you under there when someone else cranked it over? Was is right at start up and went away? Is it constant? If you decide that it is in that area and want to replace the clutch, you can bring it over here and we can do it.
I havent pulled the head off the engine yet. Im not real sure when I will get to it either. If you need it sooner, I can just let you do it.

no the noise is almost constant now.......
I cranked the truck and crawled under. The noise was definatley either in the back bottom of the motor or in the bellhousing. I'm not sure which.
I'm beggining to think less and less its in the bottom end of the motor, when the noise is gone the motor sounds great, if it were a bearing or wrist pin it seems like it would knock all the time.
When going down the road I can let the truck drift in gear and the noise goes away, instantly comes back when I put it back under load. The fact that it comes and goes depending on engine load leads me to think transmission, plus that's where the noise is loudest.
I need to listen to it some more tonight, I may go ahead and change the clutch, it's cheaper than a motor, who knows it might fix it. Thanks for the garage offer, I'll let you know what I decide.
