Fizboy's 84 Toy ota

Post by Fizboy »

As of Tuesday my project Toy is alive and moves under its own power. Few things to button up but soon it will be on the trail. Last major thing to do is find a locker for the rear that I can afford. I will probably drive it to the next meeting if all goes well.

Here is a link to the build up page.

*(edit): As of 10/25/09 I am turning this post into a collaboration post for this build. :(edit)*

This Sat. is too early. I need get it titled, tagged, and insurance. Just so when I run over someone I am covered. And inspected.

Here are some pics I took on Tuesday.

Still working on the J-arm. My 12 ton press won't press it out. I heated it and still nothing. Need a bigger press I guess.

I still haven't gotten the drive shafts lengthened either but it is at least drivable. I'll need help with this.

It is titled and tagged and it should have inspection by weeks end.

Here are some more pics. I am starting off small to work out all the bugs.

OK here is what you need to do.

Cut the welds on your rear shaft and remove the tube and save.
Go get some 2.5" sch 40 pipe long enough for rear shaft.
Cut the welds on your front shaft and remove the tube.

Bring over both your shafts, I will weld up your new heavy wall rear shaft on my jig.
We will then use the tube from your old rear shaft to make your new front.

The front will not have enough slip and will still come apart, that is why we are going to use the thin wall stuff. But it will be good for driving on the road in the snow.

You can get 2.5" sch 40 pipe in Cburg right across from the sherwin williams paint store on cambria st. Place is called something mechanical. Should be 10-15 bucks

Don't cut the weld on the slip end of the rear shaft...save Stinson one weld.

Just as a heads up your drive shaft jig is in PA until Sunday night :flipoff2:

If you have the cash and want a relatively balanced heavy wall front shaft with enough silp, get another rear shaft from D&M and allpros long slip kit.
My front shaft is sch 40 tube with a rear ujoint and allpro slip. I drove up to Roanoke in 4wd with the hubs unlocked. I had no clue till I looked down and saw my tcase shifters were parallel.

I will get with you about extending the shafts at the next meeting. Hopefully I will be able to drive it there. It is at the shop up the road for inspection today. I have a feeling that it will be rejected. I guess we will find out if VA will let you run a double shackle set up. If not then I will need to find material and a bigger welder to build hangers.

So I found out that the truck won't pass inspection with a double shackle setup. So now I have to build a rear spring hanger hopefully this weekend if I can find the material and a bigger welder really close by. They also said that I have to extend my exhaust which I wanted to do anyway. They didn't look at anything else so I have to take care of this stuff first then take it back. I don't know when this thing will be done.

By the way I have some 2" schedule 40 around here. However I have part of another drive shaft that looks like it would be just about the right length to weld in.

Anyone want to help me Sunday to try and get this thing up to inspection/wheeling standards????
