1. Can anyone post an exploded view of a rear D44 from a cherokee? I have been searching the net and can not find one. If you know a webstie that has one posted, let me know.

2. Has anyone replaced the inner oil seals in a D30 on a jeep wrangler? How hard will this be? Would anyone be be willing to help replace mine this weekend? As always, I will supply :beer: (usually of your choice) and food (if your really nice) :thumby:

The rear axle is out of an '89 Cherokee. Thanks for the link! Not quite what I needed but still useful info. I am looking for an exploded view, like you would find in a Hanes or Chiltons manual detailing the parts of the axle, shafts, seals, bearings and such...

Dana has service manuals online at http://www2.dana.com/expert/wc.dll?cvsp~depdf~2~

Pick "light axle" and look for model 44 front and rear carrier type in that list. it's a big old pdf file, which might have the diagram you're looking for, even if it's not from the exact same vehicle.

oh well i thought the 68-78 axle link has exploded view you just had to find the right page, the newer link wasnt working oh well, i think the link piney gave you is the same thing, good luck

Thanks for the links! they are both useful. Anyone know anything about D30 oil seals? Apparently there are 2 sizes for the inner seals and the outer seals are part of the hub assembly.

this leads to my next question... How can you determine which one is leaking? There is diff. fluid leaking out both sides of the axle onto the knuckles of the wheels. The guy at the parts store says it should just be the inner seals. Any thoughts?

hub seals on a front steering axle never see gear oil.. the inner seals on both sides of the center section hold the gear oil in the diff.

Your dana 30 has a vacuum disconnect that is bathed in the same gear oil as the differential. The drivers side seal will be under the differntial. The passenger side seal will be between the vacuum disconnect and the inner "c". If both sides are leaking, both seals are bad. I've never done it myself but I hear the passenger side seal is a pain to replace.

Thanks for the info!!!

Has anyone replaced the oil seals a rear D44? I was told I have to cut off the axle shaft bearings. Can someone confirm this? I was hoping to just replace the oil seals. I plan on checking the bearing but if they seem in good shape I was just going to leave them alone.

OK, so I have pulled out the rear axle shafts and am going to have to cut off the bearings and the retainer rings. How do I get the new bearings press fitted properly on shaft? ANyone got a bearing press :confused2:

so the rear is leaking too?

i don't know what the proper way to do it is, but i would warm up the new bearing in the oven and then use a long pipe and large hammer to drive it home.

damn...i cant believe i didnt thing of that while i was at your house, sheila....its works really well. heat up the bearing and cool the shaft and it turns a press fit into a slip fit.

makes it really easy to put bearings on....

I dont have the vac disconnect, but I replaced my 30 seals late last night. I found a good way to do it is to use a large socket (I used a 34mm) put a crap load of extensions on it and while the shafts and carrier are out, put the contraption down the tube and pound on it with a maw till the seal comes out. they can also be pressed back in this way with the help of someone guiding the seal in straight.
