as for dimensions.....
Awesome! thanks!
In the pic above, do you know what's in the tailhousing? It appears removable. Is it empty? I'm wondering if I could remove that and trim down the output shaft and bolt the adapter onto where it used to attach.
Is that essentially how the 4wd trans' work? Are they just the same housing minus that tailhousing w/ a different output shaft?
Lastly, do you know if there were ever stock flanges for the outputs? or if one exists that will fit?
The trans in the above pic is a 2wd. I know the output shaft is longer on the 2wd than the 4wd. In my blazer I have a np208 bolted to it. The output shaft is actually a little short, but it still works.
Since you seem to have a decent working knowledge of these trannies, here's what I want to do.
I want to set the trans output up with a flange instead of a yoke. Then I will put a flange on the input shaft of the transfercase, and bolt them together instead of making a special coupler shaft with internal splines. That whole assembly would then fit inside of an adapter that would mate the trans housing to the t-case housing. Make sense?
Ok here is a new idea. I think the output of a TH400 and 4L80E is 32 spline. Might be the same spline count and diameter as a Ford 205 which uses 4 bolt flanges.

Yes they are. I know for a fact because I went from a t400 to a 4l80e and used the same tcase.
