My transfer case (or something related) quit...

Post by Redneck7 »

1995 Suburban, stock motor and drivetrain. Auto/350ci. Was pulling a boat trailer (with a 4,500lb boat on it) through some mud when my transfer case kicked itself out of 4lo, which is has been prone to do for the past 5 years. That said, it kicked out a littler more vigorously this time. When I kicked her back into 4lo I did not get the usual lurch forward. Instead I didn't get crap. Same with high range both 2 and 4. Didn't move. Driveshafts were still attached. Putting the tranny into park resulted in that slipping gear sound you get from throwing it into park before you stop the truck...only the truck was doing nothing but sitting still, so I'm taking it that the motor was spinning the tranny and that's where the useful spinning stopped.

If transfer case, or something major inside of that transfer case is likely done, what are my options for upgrading?

I'm not sure whats in there, but I've heard some good things about NP241 cases. Probably what you have already though. Atlas?

Hmmm, is it a 241? Lever or switch/knob? Do you have a "Auto" or "Autotrac" position? Clearly something is broken (shift fork maybe). Not too hard to pull apart or could pick one up on the internet cheap.

241, Lever shift and nothing but 2hi, N, 4hi and 4lo. Worst part of the day was having to hear my buddy yack and yack about how funny it was to have a big ole chevy on my trailer behind his Ford.
I'm pulling it this week some time and just gonna break it open and stare. Hopefully something jumps out at me.

Then it should be a 241. I would just check the obvious first (shift linkage adjustment?). Look for a used replacement. Didn't you say the Sub has high miles?

Edit: after reading your first post I would say you broke the input shaft (hopefully not the output of the trans). The 241 is quite strong and I wouldn't worry too much about upgrading to anything else unless you have plans for some serious wheeling in the future. If that is the case look for a 205 upgrade and maybe a doubler to get your low range back.

Took apart my 241 in my Blazer due to shift fork issue. Threw a new fork in there and good to go. (Fork came out of that tcase you gave John a few years ago James!) Hardest part is getting all 120 needle bearings back on the mainshaft without loosing any!

A few pics of the inside of the case in this album...

Okay, I dumped the truck in my buddy's driveway yesterday and today when he got home from work my buddy disconnected my front driveshaft and said he can move the rear output like 2-3inches in and out...what's that mean? Secondly, is a 241C 241C a 241C? Guy has one for sale around here (Suffolk) for $120 out of a 1990 K5 Blazer. Same case? Decent price? Baber, your album require a password and the pics seem like they're worth seeing.

The only difference I am aware of between 241c is drivers or passenger drop (front output). The one out of a 90 Blazer is probably worth more then that (key component in a GM Poor Mans' Doubler lol), but is pass drop. You need drivers drop.

Edit: Is your Sub a 3/4 or 1/2 ton? That is another difference. You need to make sure you get a 27 spline from a TH700R4/4L60E or a 32 spline from TH400/4L80E whichever you have.

Thought so. You should have no problem finding one for ~$100 on Craigslist/Pirate/wherever. Might also want to pay attention to output style. All of them should be slip yoke rear, but now that I think about it, the later versions might have a slip yoke front output (yours is likely fixed front). That might apply only to the Autotrac cases (243?).

Ive got a 241 at my house that I dont have much use for. I believe its 27 spline but I can know for sure on saturday. Cant make any promises as to the condition as I never ended up running it. It did shift well and into all gears last time I played with it. If it would be of any use to you I can bring it down on sunday, Im sure at worst its good for parts.

Unlocked my photobucket; I forgot I had locked it down during a little war with a fag on pirate (bowtie96 if anybody knows of that shitstorm)

The 241 in my 98 1/2ton truck is slip yoke front, not sure what the cut off year is for fixed front if the IFS trucks ever even had a slip front....
