Old ford f150 (possibly my new summer project)

Some things to think about....
79 f150 ~ 5300lbs
Trailer with 3500 lbs axles ~ 2200
5300 + 2200 = 7500 lbs
At that point you are already over the rating for the trailer axles. You have not even shoved tools, spare parts, camping gear, and some big ass mud tires on there yet.
A trailer with axles heavier than 3500lbs is only going to go up in weight. You will getting real close or over what the F150 is rated to tow.
Im sure the hitch on your F150 is 500 lb tongue and 5000 towing.
If you get set up with a good electric brake controller, truck tires rated to tow your load, a tranny cooler, weight distributing hitch set up, and a trailer rated for your load with electric brakes on both axles, then I would say go for it.
Just look at the costs that will be associated with getting set up to haul 8000lbs.
