Audi A4 Blown Engine?

Post by Yoda »

My sister called me today looking for my advice and I thought I'd see what ya'll thought. She drives a 2003 Audi A4 which she recently wrecked into a deer and sank a few grand into fixing. Today she had the water pump freeze up which caused the timing belt to break. It has a 1.8L Turbo in it which is a pretty high compression engine. She said the mechanic she took it too said this happens quite a bit with high mileage Audi's and often the cylinders contact the valves destroying them.

She is buying a new car and is parking the Audi at her house and wants to get it fixed and sell it rather than sell it as is or have me part it out. I don't have a lot of experience with Audi's but I probably know enough to replace the timing belt/water pump on it or drop in a new motor if I can find one for her. I may also try and rebuild the engine if I have the time, but this would be a new endeavor and with Audi's being pretty high performance and may require a little more expertise.

Anyone have any thoughts or advice? She may also be interested in paying someone to rebuild it for the right price.

I can just hear the gears turning in Matt's head haha. Actually it is not a manual. It is an auto with tiptronic. It is now currently in Charlottesville. I plan on pulling the head to check the valves over break and see what kind of damage if any there is.

They don't look bent to me ...

The cylinders have a few nice little tick marks where they contacted the valves, but should be ok. There are 5 valves per cylinder and a double overhead cam on this thing which I found quite interesting. We ordered new valves and are having a guy machine the head and reseat the valves. Then just crossing fingers and bolting everything back together.
