Trail signs on Mtn Lake

Post by Jwlman »

I was thining that maybe we could make up some signs to post up near the mud holes at mtn Lake to let people know that they are not part of the trail so that others don't make the same mistake we did.

Thoughts?

Not a good idea unless cleared with the Forest Service first. We're already on their bad list and I don't want to make it worse. Besides, most of the people that frequent Mountain Lake wouldn't pay attention anyways. Just keep your eyes open when you're up there and spread the word that the holes along the sides of the trail are off limits.

signs are good for target practice. it will take either filling the holes in or blocking them with HUGE rocks to stop people from going in. they did this years back to all of the really bad holes up there (it used to be a whole lot worse than hummer hole).

as for this "same mistakes we made" talk.... don't think you're the first ones to go through those holes. hundreds of people have for many years before you, and hummer hole is no more fawked up now than it was 4 (or more- since that's as long as I've been here) years ago. the precedent had been set that the holes were wheelable and it was not made clear otherwise to anyone until last night. don't kick yourself.

I know it woudn't keep everyone out but it would keep honest people out of them and also help spread tha word that they are not part of the trail. We could put the ranger stations number on there so maybe one of the honst people who saw others going thought it would report it to the ranger station.

Assuming we could get permissoin to put them up

yea its a good idea, but I think they'd be gone fast, I was gonna suggest putting private property signs by the "shell" (coal) hill for that owner, but it probly wouldnt do any good, and they'd probly be gone fast

We definitely don't need to be posting signs anywhere on private property where we don't have permission to. I guarantee that private property owners at this location will view this as vandalism and proceed to the authorities. So just go up and wheel Mountain Lake and just avoid the mud holes and the coal/shale bank areas.

Ok guys here is the deal, Back before most all of you got to b-burg mtn, lake was 100 times worse than it is now, my truck on 38.5 sx.s locked in the rear had a hard time getting through there. Right after 9-11 they came in a drained all of the holes, Hummer hole had two parts the part that is actually part of the road now (it was 2ft deep on the shallow side) and then there was hummer hole on the right which would swallow 44's. so anyways after 9-11 they put tons of stone down, drained all the holes and put huge rocks infront of all of the holes, I;m not sure what happened to the rocks but i guess they are not there anymore. So mtn lake was pretty much closed, but over the time the enforcement has slacked off and the people started opening the holes back up and/or making new ones on the side of the trail, Most of the mud holes that are up there now we all made by people leaving the trail to make a mud hole.

oh no you got me wrong adam, I meant with permission, basically just doing it for them if they're feeling lazy or something. What I'm saying is it sounds good [with permission] on paper, but I just don't think it would last.
