Okay Toyota Guys, Lets Go!
I'm looking for some info here. 90-94 Toyota Pickup/4Runner with the 3.0L V6, are they really that bad? I know Whittaker is running one, what about you other Toyota guys. What do you think of them? What should you look out for with these motors/drivetrains?
I feel like a hundred bucks...
most of the bad things you hear are the head gaskets, lack of power and they dont like roll overs. thing that worries me is how i hear they love to hydrolock themselves with oil after a flop/roll. i think it has decent enough power.
transmission aint bad at all, problem lies in the tcase. its chain driven, so you cant regear it and cant use it as part out a dual case setup.
why you askin adam, you looking at a truck or somethin?

You pretty much covered everything! There was a recall on the headgaskets on these motors, so you can call a Toyota dealer with the vin and they can tell you if it has been replaced. I have had 2 Toyotas with this motor and they had plenty of power for me. In my 93 pickup I was running 4.88 gears and 33" tires and I had no problem getting the governor to kick in at 110mph. I used to hit 110 on a daily basis until I got a reckless ticket. So I don't know what everyone's problem is that says that motor is slow... I guess they need to learn how to do a tune up or something.

there's a pretty simple way to get past the oil hydorlocking thing, the 3.0's and i think the 3.4's both use a crankcase vent that dumps right back into the intake. when the engine is on it's side, it dumps oil into the intake, and then when you crank it over, plink, boom... just reroute it to a catch can and you should be good to go. the headgasket thing is a pretty big concern if you don't want to hafta touch the engine. if you don't mind ripping the heads off for a little preventative maintenance, its a fairly straightforward job. just not a lot of room in the engine bay.
as far as the t-case stuff, check marlin's website. the R150F is a pretty damn stout tranny, i think its got a 23 spline output (vs 21 spl on the 4cyl stuff). there's two routes you can go, either keep the chain driven t-case and run a top shift gear reduction box in between the tranny and original t-case (divorced), or switch to both a geared reduction box and a second geared t-case (again, both top shift). both ways are a little pricey, tho (but 228:1 is retarded cool).
the v6 trucks also have beefier brakes (front calipers, bigger master cylinders) and beefier third members.
The best thing about yota's is you can find perfectly good d-shaft yokes in trash piles.
