death wobble v2.0

Post by jonesy »

alright guys .... after changing out the trac bar with a new one, in the right place, with the proper hardware ....

im still getting some nasty death wobble ...

highsteer, hiems all around except for the pitman ... all of which are tight ... its about 3/4" toe in right now which will be changed to 1/8 .... but i dont think that would affect it too much ....

so list the causes of death wobble ...

3/4" toe will DEFINATELY do it

Other causes:

Loose wheel bearings
Worn balljoints
Loose steering joints
Shot bushings in the trackbar

Does it wobble no matter what, or does it stay stable on very smooth roads?

I would also fix the toe 1st thing. You have addressed the obvious cause w/ the tracbar, so you should be close. You had asked me recently for the torque specs for the wheelbearing nuts- does that mean you've been through there and checked all that out? I have had massively destroyed wheelbearings and not gotten the wobble, but amongst other factors they could be contributing. Granted I'm sure you've checked the obvious.

Another theory that I'll throw out, but it's just an idea, is that it could be cause by your drag link being out of phase with the tracbar. I can think of a few wacky scenarios having to do with that which might cause an oscillation in the steering.

Other ideas to throw out there- tire balance, or a bent rim causing death-wobble like symptoms.

I think Eric's idea of a bent wheel is the most plausible idea here, since you were hit in the wheel in the first place.

Although I agree that a bent wheel or lack of balance is a plausible and even likely cause, you are still a moron.

He got hit in the wheel area of a DIFFERENT axle and a DIFFERENT wheel :loser:

the wheel bearings all seem fine ... theyare torqued to spec and have no play in them ....

i could see the draglink / tracbar being an issue .... considering that the tracbar has positive angle and the draglink has negative angle .... ill move the draglink to the bottom of the highsteer arm tomorrow and see if that fixes any issues ...

I'd be careful what you say randy. death wobble and jeeps seem to be going hand-in-hand lately.

my logic didn't make sense, stupid beer, how would laughing fix it? lol

stienberg- its kinda weird, as rigged as my junk is, never have I had death wobble, once I had a little bit, but a swaybar pin was the culprit and I drove off the side of 81

I believe that shady steering can actually cancel out the effects of a shady tracbar so you don't get the death wobble. Grubb's rig did this I think.
