Rebuilding a 700R4

Post by TheGr8Doughboy »

Rebuilding an '88 700r4. I know it supposedly slipped a little when it was cold before it got pulled out of the truck. How far should I rebuild this thing? Most of the stuff I'm finding online is for either comp buggys or drag racers... I've got neither.

I'm hoping to just do a mild rebuild (clutches and seals) and then either a shift kit of a bigger servo.

Should I replace the torque converter while I'm there? Anything else I should look at?

Looking into fabbing up the shifters at school... all four of um :flipoff2:

Thanks
Chris

How many miles were on the tranny? the clutches usually wear out before the torque converter. I guess it just depends on how much money you want to put into it. Of course, it's always better to put all new parts in there to be sure there's no problems. However, if there was less than 100,000 miles on the tranny, then I wouldn't replace the converter until it crapped out on me. I would just replace the clutches.

When my 700R4 started puking fluid and catching on fire all the time, I rebuilt it. I got the trans go kit (or something like that)from B&M. Just comes with clutches and seals and some updates where you drill some holes in the valve body to make it shift better. I'd recommend replacing the converter if the trans was slipping before just because you don't want pieces of clutches to be in the fluid when you put it back in. Also flush out the trans cooler. (Not sure if this is a new install or a replacement of what trans you have now)

It wasn't that hard to rebuild the trans with the step by step manual you get with the kit.

The transmission was rebuilt three years ago and everything inside look REAL clean. The fluid does have a burnt smell and is dark red... but not real dirty.

Torque converter eh? How do I chose the stall?

Thanks

Check out this post on Pirate:

If that doesn't help, do some searching on Pirate or google and you'll find what you need.

Every application is different, but I put a stock one in and it does fine. Not too sure what the actual stall speed is, but prolly something like 1800.

HTH,
