My Sammy

Post by Trailduster79 »

It will be undergoing a large transformation this weekend, with the intentions of having it ready for Uwharrie by the 20th.

This is the day I brought it home after paying 100 bucks for it.

Here is what is getting done in the next two weeks:

6" Spring Over with stock springs (Rear almost done)
6.5:1 T-case gears (Completed)
Welded rear (Almost Completed)
32" BFG Muds (ones that were orginially on the Trailduster)
Swapped in Dodge Neon Seats (Completed)
Crossover steering using 3/4" heims
Install longer brake lines/shocks

What is going to be done long term:

Toyota axles with 4.38's
YJ's with Missing Links
33x13.50 LTB's
Herculine the interior
Paint it with the signature semi-flat black paint job.
Power steering using a sidekick box and a heep pump.

Parts that I have purchased or aquired:

6.5 t-case gears
6" spring over
YJ springs
1 front yota axle
2 rear yota axles
Crossover/high steer for stock axles
extended brake lines (94 Nissian 300ZX front brake lines)
32" BFG's
complete spare stock front axle
spare front axle shafts/hubs
5.12 gears for the stock axles (will probably get sold and never installed)
Power steering setup off a sidekick
3/4" heims for crossover

I will be taking pictures throughout the build.

So far I have:

Wired a push button start since there was no ignition when I bought it
Pulled rear axle
Started to weld spider gears
Installed 6.5 t-case gears
rebuild shifters on both t-case and tranny
replaced stock spring bushings with poly ones

Nice man. Although that hood is a little clean, you might need some artwork on it.

didn't get to work on it much last night, but I did get the new poly leaf spring bushings in, and the leaf springs mounted back up.

Tonight I plan to finish welding the rear end, and hopefully reassemble the rear axle, that way Thursday I can reinstall the rear axle and start pulling the front apart.

stock.

I had planned on running 4.56's but when I found I had the 4.38's and not 4.10's I decided to run em.

The paint code on the end of the pinion matches the chart that Krantz gave me, and when I do the math, it comes out to 4.375, so I know that's what I have.

I was really suprised when I found that I had the 4.38's, I didn't even know they existed until then.

I know you all don't give a damn about jeeps but its possible to find a stock 4.56 geared D30/44 combo in an xj (althought its more likely to be a 35) 4cyl autos back in the day had 4.56 and may have been optioned with a 44

that's pretty cool...i have no idea what options package/drivetrain they came with, but they aren't common at all.

edit: 'nother reason i asked is there have been a few times when toyota's paint codes DIDN'T match the actual ratio...

musta been friday afternoon in japan...

Yeah, my '81 has pink paint (4.10), but the axle code on the ID plate says they're 3.90, and the spin test says 3.75 or so...

I got the rear welded up, new leaf spring bushing in, rear axle reassembled, new spring perches welded on, and the rear axle reinstalled last night.

Just have to hook the driveshaft up and bleed the brakes, and the rear will be done.

Not worring about shocks right now because it has to be on the trail in two weeks and I don't have the time or money to make new shock mounts and buy new shocks.

Will start on the front tonight.

well, got a lot done this weekend.

The 6" spring over is done.

All that is left for it to be ready to wheel is new front brake lines, t-case bushings, and I need to get some tube for my draglink.

Here are some pics from this weekend.

And for now, I am rocking no shocks since I didn't have time or money for them.
