You could go with a lunchbox locker like an aussie or lockrite for about $200. I ran a lockrite in the front of my TJ with 31's for a couple years. Never really noticed it on the street except for when I made u-turns too fast or turned to fast into a parking space. Then you could hear it ratcheting. When running 4wd in the snow on the street you will experience some understeer at first until you learn how to drive a little slower around corners.

blew the spider gears out? A lunchbox would be the best and quickest way to fix it, but it makes me wonder what chewed up the spider gears in the first place?

chewed up the spider gears? nothing. its a D30. the thing is a turd. there is never any cause for a D30 or D35 failure beside just being a shitty axle.

Most of your drivetrain suppliers such as Randy's Ring and Pinion could get you a lunchbox locker. I imagine if you were type in aussie locker or lockrite in Google you would find a wealth of information. I bought all of my axle parts from DC4wd in Vinton since he had the best price on the parts. www.dc4wd.com
