welding spiders

Post by csult »

I believe I'm getting ready to weld the rear end in my Dodge
I have dun several sets over the years but it seems like no matter how to clean I get the slang off them the bearings always come out in a few thousand miles I am looking to prevent that on this truck so if anybody has any tips I would love to hear them

Don't do it. You are killing the bearing because of the arcs from power going through them when welding most likely. That and the heat generated. You would be better off to get a mini-spool or deal with out it unless you pull the carrier and remove the bearings from it before you weld then reinstall them after.

Like Terry said, grounding through the bearings will shorten their life. Ground the ring gear instead of the housing or pull the carrier. I don't think it's necessary to pull the bearings off though.

I suppose that would work but I think it would be asking for a noisy/sloppy diff. I could also see that being more likely to break the carrier during shockloading.

Yeah that's what I was thinking also but if I did it that way I can remove it later on down the road and I can remove the spider gears when welding
