Any reputable transmission shops in the blacksburg area? 3rd gear is going out and im torn between having it rebuilt or just buying a new "performance" one thats supposed to have a heavier duty 3rd gear for my truck. Wanted to get some estimates on rebuild before i do anything

I had Auto Master Tire and Service replace my clutch. They also noticed the bell housing was cracked, so they welded that up as well. I have always liked their service. They also offer a 10% discount on tranny service if you are a new customer.

If you are not going to do the rebuild yourself, it is going to be very expensive either way. If you buy a new crate tranny, you can at least install yourself to save money. You should also have less downtime. If you have yours rebuilt, it will probably be cheaper overall but take longer and what's $500 when you are spending a couple thousand. I have never had experience with a shop doing a transmission rebuild because the only time I've had one go out, I rebuilt it myself. Make sure you know that the guy who's doing it knows what he's doing. It's not like replacing a clutch, at all.
