LSD/Auto locker question

I have come across a powertrax lock-right for a good price and I wanted to make sure I could take out my current L.S.D. and just swap it with the locker, my real question is can you use the locker in a limited slip housing, this is on a Toyota 8.4 3rd.

I don't know on Toyota in particular but you usually have to have a standard open differential case to swap in a lunchbox locker.

yea as far as i know standard carriers are required, but ive only ever dealt with ford limited slips, yota axles might be different depending on the type of limited slip they use.

If so couldn't I take the standard carrier from my old 3rd (if it's still in your garage Sam) and put it on the 3rd in my truck then install the locker? So I wouldn't have to regear the old one...

Youre gonna have to use a standard carrier for a locker in the rear of the 8.4. Regearing the rear of the 8.4 isnt that hard since it has carrier shims. In theory all you would have to do is put the 4.10 ring gear on the open carrier and put it back in the third thats in your truck right now and just double check your pattern and backlash. You shoudnt have to mess with the pinion shims or preload since all youre doing is replacing the carrier. Also, unless your carrier or pinion bearings are pretty fucked theres not an absolute need to be using a press. Should be a pretty straight forward swap.

If they are the same gear ratio I don't see why not as long as they are the same ring gear size.

The old one has 3.91 and is open and the current on is 4.10 and limited slip but for $200 plus shipping for brand new in box locker the little work would be worth it

I'd say that the carrier spacing is the same on them. Look up the carrier splits on that axle to be sure though.
