80 Toyota Tanny and t-case and other goodies

Post by Trailduster79 »

Is the tranny and t-case out of an 80 yota worth anything?

Anything wrong with the axles?

I am picking up an 80 toyota this weekend to junk and didn't know if it would be worth keeping the tranny and t-case or not. Plan on using the axles under my samurai.

Is there anything good or bad about 80 toyota axles?

I know Krantz, Clay and Arya are yota gurus.

Front solid axles are the same through the years except the 84 and 85 which have extra gussetting on the housing. The rear axles on solid axle trucks are the same 79-85 its the 86 and up that are 3" wider and have bigger brakes. I believe that its an L43 4spd trans with a top shift case. The case is definitely worth keeping the trans is not the strongest but it is shorter than newer models so it would fit in a sami a little easier. Those trannys have bearing issues though I am going through that now. Also some of these early trucks had solid pinion spacers in the diffs instead of crush sleeves. Thats about all I can think of now.

like stated, the xfer should be top shift, they are worth something for sure ... tranny isnt the best, but its not bad by any means.

if you are looking to get rid of either, let me know...im looking for a top shift xfer and a tranny for my yota

You are da man.

Oh, and by the way, I haven't forgotten about your axle. I am sorry I haven't done anything about it yet, but I do plan on coming that way soon.

I think 4 speed it has L43. If its 5 speed then its L50. I know L43 have a nonremovable bell housing and L50/52 have removable bell housings. Apparently the input bearings are weaker the L trannies as apposed to the W and G trannies.

replies so far are pretty much dead on.

The L series tranny's aren't as strong as the W series (or G series) BUT, they can be built pretty stout, Marlin's been using a built L series tranny in his Formula Toy with pretty good results.

Top shift t-case is the most desireable and it's what that toy came with. Good stuff.

The rear springs *could* be pretty useful, too, for anybody wanting to run a "rears up front" spring setup (measure to make sure, they should be 48" eye-to-eye along the top leaf and are mil-wrapped). actually, mixing the front and rear packs works pretty darn well up front on the 4 cyl toys. gives about 3-4" lift and very flexy.

you have that backwards ... the L43 has an removeable aluminum bellhousing. the later years are cast as one piece .... i know this becuase i pulled the tranny out of my 83 and it sure as hell wasnt the weight of a half-aluminum tranny :lol2:

and i double checked marlin crawler :o

Yeah, I am going to keep them too. They will bolt into a samurai with an adapter and they work great.

Main thing that will be left is the body and frame. I have no need for it, so it is going to the scrap yard next weekend.

So if anyone needs anything off the body, let me know.

I will take some pics of it when I get it home tomorrow, and if you are interested in the doors and hood, or anything else, let me know and I will keep them when it goes to the scrap yard.

The truck is now just a memory

The entire body was rusted through. The frame was rusted in half.
