Ford 9 inch carrier
How strong is the 9 inch carrier? Can it handle my 37s and a luncbox locker or should I go for a full case locker?
Word on the street is that the pinion bearing and support are weak on stock 9in third members. Its not the rest that you have to worry about. I dropped some pretty serious coin on a nodular third member that has a reinforced pinion support and a new pinion bearing. I would recommend that anyone with a 9in do the same.

Hmmm, well I don't have some serious coin laying around. I guess I will find out how well it holds up and if it dosen't I should have enough by the end of summer for one
Well I got mine about a year and a half ago. I got it on ebay for $160 (i think [not so serious I guess, but I got a detriot at the same time which made it feel more expensive]) because I didn't feel like junkyard searching. You can find them in old T-birds (I think again) and prices in general have gone down for them. They have a big N cast into the case. Its pretty easy to spot (except I think its on the top so you should bring a mirror)
The good thing about going ahead and getting one is that if the stock one blows, it'll take out EVERYTHING in the diff. Locker, gears, shafts, third, and sometimes even the housing will be toasted. It'll cost you way more in the long run.
Edit: click here
Make sure you get the right bearing size to match your carrier.

To be honest I think the stock 9" third, carrier, etc is MORE than enough for your application. The guys who are blowing them up are fullsizes with big power and more tire than your running. I'm really not worried about my 9", and I beat on it pretty hard. I think if I do blow it up it will probably happen by being stupid on the street. Just throw your lunchbox locker in there, maybe a chromo cross-pin and run it.
